How did somebody come up with the idea for bridges, skyscrapers, helicopters, and nightlights? How did people figure out how to build them? In3D Engineering: Design and Build Your Own Prototypes, young readers tackle real-life engineering problems by figuring out real-life solutions. Kids apply science and math skills to create prototypes for bridges, instruments, alarms, and more. Prototypes are preliminary models used by engineers-and kids-to evaluate ideas and to better understand how things work. Engineering design starts with an idea. How do we get to the other side of the river? How do we travel long distances in short periods of time? Using a structured engineering design process, kids learn how to brainstorm, build a prototype, test a prototype, evaluate, and re-design. Projects include designing a cardboard chair to understand the stiffness of structural systems and designing and building a set of pan pipes to experiment with pitch and volume. Creating prototypes is a key step in the engineering design process and prototyping early in the design process generally results in better processes and products.3D Engineering gives kids a chance to figure out many different prototypes, empowering them to discover the mechanics of the world we know.

Presents an introduction to the basics of building design with examples from unusual homes, describing the features and building materials which go into such structures as a treehouse, boathouse, tent, and igloo. From School Library Journal: Gr 3–5—Humorous cartoon illustrations combined with photographs of structures from around the world introduce young readers to architectural concepts and vocabulary. Readers are first presented with a spread showing a real-life structure (such as a windmill in Working Homes), followed by a cartoon cross-section depicting the inner floor plan and function of the dwelling. Labels are at times confusing, as they do not always correspond to a specific part of the structure. The font makes it difficult to discern which words or phrases have been emphasized as key terms, and not all highlighted words are included in the glossary. Storybook Homes strays from the rest of the series titles through its superficial connection to fantastical structures of fairy tales. Although back pages include a glossary and list of recommended titles and websites for further exploration, these books do not provide enough substance for reports or detailed inquiries.—Meaghan Darling, Plainsboro Public Library, NJ "About this title" may belong to another edition of this title.
