This fascinating book describes the geological makeup and history of the Atacama Desert in Chile. One of the driest areas of the worldsome parts never receive any rainthe desert's climate can be cold, sometimes producing snow and fog. Readers will be fascinated to learn that the Atacama's soil is so similar to soil samples from Mars that NASA goes to this desert to test its exploration instruments. NASA has also set up its Earth-Mars Cave Detection Program in the Atacama, too. Special sections also describe the desert's natural resources and unique problems facing this region, as well as the people, plants, and animals that inhabit this desert habitat. From School Library Journal: Gr 3-7-These books are clearly written, comprehensive, and ideal for reports. Each one opens with a map showing the area covered by the desert and concludes with a map of the world's deserts. The maps and full-color photos enhance the texts and have informative captions. Readers will enjoy learning about the various animals that live in these unusual climates. For example, in the Kalahari Desert, springbok typically graze at night, but if they "do feed during the daytime, they face away from the sun. Doing so allows their white bottoms to reflect the heat." Additional subjects include the history and current status of human inhabitants, plant life, the terrain, natural resources, and ways the desert may be at risk. The concisely written texts will be valuable to report writers.-Stephanie Farnlacher, Trace Crossings Elementary School, Hoover, ALα(c) Copyright 2011. Introduces the festivals and holidays of China. From School Library Journal: Gr 3-5-Holidays well known and obscure are introduced in this series. Each volume begins with a welcome to its titular nation and includes information about its geographical setting and general population, and offers a generic introduction to the concept of traditions. China and Japan highlight the nations' emphasis on the family and ancestry. The holidays are then presented spread by spread in approximate chronological order, starting with the New Year. Each occasion is accompanied by dates (lunar or Gregorian) and information on its origins and how it is observed. Much attention is paid to which holidays give people the day off from work or school. Captioned photographs-mainly in color-adorn each spread, along with "Did You Know?" boxes featuring fun facts. Vocabulary words in bold are well chosen and defined in a glossary; the index helps young researchers-probably this series' primary users-locate necessary facts. Good updates for the "Festivals of the World" series (Gareth Stevens, 1997) or to augment titles in the Marshall Cavendish 2010 series.-Rebecca Dash Donsky, New York Public Libraryα(c) Copyright 2011. Examines the holidays and festivals of Egypt, including Mawlid, Coptic Christmas, and Abu Simbel Sun Festival. From Booklist: Ever heard of Coptic Christmas? How about National Wattle Day? If that’s a no and a no, look to the titles in the Cultural Traditions in My World series for an introduction. Unlike your typical about-a-country books, these focus solely on holidays, special events, and customs—encompassing everything from religious observances to seasonal rituals—and present them in chronological order as they occur throughout the year. Celebrations highlighted in Cultural Traditions in Egypt include Sham el Naseem (Arabic for “sniff the breeze”), an April or May festival that marks the start of spring. These large-format books feature one custom per spread and colorful, action-oriented photographs. Back matter is fairly nonexistent; nonetheless, the titles offer a tidy overview of a topic covered in many elementary school units. Grades 2-5, --Ann Kelley "About this title" may belong to another edition of this title.

The Holocaust was the deliberate extermination of Jews and other people deemed undesirable by Germany's Nazi party during World War II. This thoughtful book examines evidence from the early 1900s of racism, intolerance, and nationalism in Germany that led up to this genocide. Readers will learn how history repeats itself when evidence is denied or misinterpreted, and find out how to use critical thinking in their own examinations of evidence. By the time Hurricane Sandy had hit New York City on October 22, 2012, it had left a trail of death and destruction across the Caribbean and the eastern seaboard of the United States. Affecting 24 U.S. states, Sandy is the second-costliest hurricane in United States history. This informative book follows the timeline of the hurricane and features personal accounts by those who experienced the destruction in many New York City and New Jersey neighborhoods. Topics include: From Booklist: While previous books in the ongoing Disaster Alert! series, such as Environmental Disaster Alert! (2005) and Hurricane and Typhoon Alert! (2004), usually presented general topics, these two new volumes focus on particular recent events. Each book explains the natural phenomenon that precipitated the titular disaster as well as its effects and its aftermath. Devoting equal space to text and color illustrations, mainly photos, a typical two-page spread offers a few paragraphs of text, two or more illustrations, and a sidebar or fast-fact box. After a short discussion of hurricanes, Superstorm Sandy traces the path of Sandy from the storm’s formation in the Caribbean through its devastating effects in coastal New Jersey and New York. Topics presented include “NYC’s Transit System,” “Manhattan Hospitals,” and “Rebuilding after Sandy.” Libraries with a demand for books on the topics will find these serviceable choices. Presents information on different kinds of gases and their practical, everyday uses. From School Library Journal: K-Gr 3-Excellent introductions to the concept of matter. In each book, matter is clearly defined, as are the different forms it can take. Although the opening section is similar from book to book, different photographs and examples are provided, so the titles are not overly repetitive. Each one then moves on to describe the subject. Numerous "What do you think?" sidebars offer simple experiments that add interest and enhance understanding. For example, in Solid, readers are encouraged to dissolve sugar in milk. This title introduces the properties of liquids. Young scientists will discover what happens to a liquid when it is heated and cooled. Readers will observe, describe, and compare the properties and behaviors of liquids. Relatable examples help readers make meaningful connections to the text. From Booklist: Sure, children can identify a liquid. But they probably don’t understand the liquid’s matter, mass, properties, volume, and state. Ten two-page chapters, bright illustrations, and simple experiments work to fix that by appealing to the more inquisitive of young readers. For example, in a section on liquids, children see how a liquid changes shape to match different containers. Another experiment using water, oil, and honey asks children to determine which of the three will reach the bottom of the bowl first. Unfortunately, little discussion surrounds the experiments. The second half of the book leaves the primary topic of liquids and examines the changing state of matter, from liquid to solid to vapor. The title is therefore misleading, though presumably the entire Matter Close-Up series paints a more complete picture. Grades 1-4. --J. B. Petty "About this title" may belong to another edition of this title.
