Liv Holme is not exactly thrilled to be moving to a new town with her mother. After all, high school can be brutal, even more so when you're a fifteen-year-old, bisexual goth. But Liv is determined to be who she is, bullies or not. Still, being the new kid and the only out student brings her a lot of unwelcome attention, and Liv flounders in her search for community. The only person who makes time for her is one of teachers, but Liv isn't sure how to feel about the way he behaves toward her. Thankfully, she's found the perfect escape: the mall. Under its fluorescent lights, Liv feels far away from her parents' strained marriage and the peers who don't understand her. Amid the bright storefronts, food court smell, and anonymous shoppers, Liv is safely one of the crowd and can enjoy the feeling of calling the shots in her own life for once. With the help of her suburban refuge, Liv sets off on a journey of self-acceptance and learns to navigate the ups and downs of high school and to recognize true friendship.

A body-positive picture book about a young boy's love for his mother and his mother's belly. Everyone has a panza—it can be big and round, soft and small, or somewhere in between. But a young boy’s favorite panza of all is Mamá’s. Her panza is capable of remarkable things, and she loves it as an important part of herself. Her panza was also his first home. Even before he was born, it cradled and held him. When he’s feeling shy and needs a place to hide or when he wants somewhere to rest during a bedtime story, Mamá’s panza is always there. With affirming text by Isabel Quintero and vivid art by Iliana Galvez, Mamá’s Panza is a young boy’s love letter to his mother, along with a celebration of our bodies and our bellies.

In Meg Medina's follow-up to her Newbery Medal-winning novel, Merci takes on seventh grade, with all its travails of friendship, family, love--and finding your rhythm. Seventh grade is going to be a real trial for Merci Suárez. For science she's got no-nonsense Mr. Ellis, who expects her to be a smart as her brother, Roli. She's been assigned to co-manage the tiny school store with Wilson Bellevue, a boy she barely knows, but whom she might actually like. And she's tangling again with classmate Edna Santos, who is bossier and more obnoxious than ever now that she is in charge of the annual Heart Ball. One thing is for sure, though: Merci Suárez can't dance--not at the Heart Ball or anywhere else. Dancing makes her almost as queasy as love does, especially now that Tía Inés, her merengue-teaching aunt, has a new man in her life. Unfortunately, Merci can't seem to avoid love or dance for very long. She used to talk about everything with her grandfather, Lolo, but with his Alzheimer's getting worse each day, whom can she trust to help her make sense of all the new things happening in her life? The Suárez family is back in a touching, funny story about growing up and discovering love's many forms, including how we learn to love and believe in ourselves.

“The perfect book to help kids build confidence. It's great for children in school, speaks to their imagination, and challenges them.” — Tom Godfrey, Editor, The South Etobicoke News Kids need confidence to thrive and this book shows them exactly what they can do to build confidence. It challenges them to take action and learn from it through a fun and interactive activity called, The Confidence Cup. This touching story is about a boy who lacks confidence and seeks his mother’s guidance in becoming more confident. As a topic, confidence can be abstract and vague to children and parents. Mommy, What is Confidence? illustrates what confidence looks like in real life. Confidence is something that affects all of us and it is important to guide children in the right direction, so that they can fulfill their potential and lead successful lives. With the interactive Confidence Cup, this book not only serves as a lesson-driven story, but an actionable process that kids can easily follow to create tangible, positive accomplishments in their developing lives. You can cut it out together and hang it in their favorite spot. By earning stars, children will be able to see their progress as they grow. Mommy, What is Confidence? can be your child’s first confidence building storybook. Or give it as a gift to nephews, nieces, grandchildren, or friends’ children for birthdays, Christmas, baby showers, just to show you care, and other occasions. Give a gift that has true, meaningful, and lifelong impact.

See below for English description. My name is Kikelomo and I am cherished! It's Kikelomo's first day of school and she is excited! But when it's time to share in her classroom circle, Kikelomo is surprised and saddened when other children make fun of her name. When Kikelomo comes home that night, her mother and father remind her how carefully they chose her name and that it means "a child who is cherished" in Yoruba, the language of her mother's family. It prompts her to think about all the times she feels cherished and who she is, held inside her loving family. When Kikelomo returns to school the next day, she can't wait to share why calling her by her name is important, and how everyone can pronounce it if they try. With this simple act, her classmates -- and teacher! -- are all inspired to learn and share the stories of their names too. Joyful, powerful and infused with love, this proudly affirming story will resonate with every child who needs to stand up for their big, beautiful name, and encourage kids and grownups from all backgrounds to think about their own unique connection to their name. Get ready to move! Everyone is invited as Bear, Moose, and a medley of forest animals join in an impromptu dance--each in their own way. Stepping high, galumphing low, leaping fast, wiggling slow. "I like your moves. But I'm not like you. So I'll just do what I can do." Some like to kick their feet and bend their knees to the music. Others prefer to slip and slide . . . or swoop down . . . or skip high and low! Whatever their style, children will be drawn by David Martin's buoyant rhymes and Raissa Figueroa's vibrant illustrations as Bear, Moose, Snake, and other forest animals dance to their own groove in a rhythmic celebration of individuality.
